American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) lawyer search
When hiring an immigration attorney, it is extremely important to verify and make sure that they have an active license to practice law, are in good standing with a State Bar Association, and maintain their license with continuing legal education to ensure they are actually licensed to practice law.
One of the best resources to check all of this information is through the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) lawyer search. If the immigration attorney is a member of AILA, that is also a great way to check and make sure the person is actually a lawyer and is not committing notario fraud. - Although undocumented immigrants who do not have work permits cannot work as professionals as employees, they can serve as professionals as consultants, contractors, and business owners.
- In order to become a professional in certain fields, a license may be needed at the state level.
- Many states unnecessarily block immigrants from being able to obtain licenses to become licensed as professionals if they do not have immigration status and/or a social security number (SSN).
- However, there are many states that DO permit undocumented immigrants who do not have SSNs to obtain professional licenses, providing a pathway to career development and economic opportunity.
- Please note: make sure to carefully read the important disclosures in the Guide as this is a complicated area. For example, even if a state allows licensure in a certain field without an SSN, an SSN may still be required to complete clinical hours and background checks, and this information is subject to change – it’s best to contact the licensing board directly to verify.
